TP-40: April 2008

My dear Confreres,

Greetings of peace and joy in the Risen Lord! The resurrection of Jesus gives us real hope and it brings peace and joy which no one else can give or take away from us. However, only those who die with Christ experience the peace and joy he gives. For us this dying and rising is not an act accomplished once and for all although it happened at our baptism still it is an ongoing process, a daily affair. As our patron St. Francis de Sales advises us, we have to begin anew everyday, our baptismal life, religious commitment, and missionary zeal.

Salesian Seminar

tp40: April 2008

“It is extremely rare that an author brings about radical changes in humans and society through his book. Still rarer it is that its momentum continues for centuries and never ceases. Such is the author St. Francis de Sales and his book Introduction to the Devout Life. Nearly 350 years before Lumen Gentium (of the Second Vatican Council) spoke about the Universal Call to Holiness, St. Francis de Sales wrote: “It is an error, or rather, a heresy, to try to exclude the devout life (holiness) from the soldiers regiment, the workman’s shop, the court of rulers or the home of the married.”

This year, 2008, marks the beginning of the Fourth Centenary of the publication, The Introduction to the Devout Life. It keeps its relevance even today. The laity often spontaneously ask: Why didn’t anyone introduce me to this book so far? Today some search for a spirituality for the laity. The Introduction offers a spirituality suitable not only to the laity or religious of any country or nation but also of any denomination and even of any religious tradition. This spiritual classic transcends time and space. It touches the heart and transforms.

This year, coincidentally, marks also the Silver Jubilee of the Salesian Seminar. During the past 25 years The Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales had been keenly involved in upholding and spreading Salesian Spirituality through the Salesian Seminars on various relevant topics. This is an occasion to thank God for the marvelous graces and insights, which He has showered on all through these seminars.

To mark these two great occasions, Indian Institute of Spirituality is organizing the Salesian Seminar 2008 from 4th May (evening 6’o clock) – 9th May (noon). This year the whole theme of the seminar will be centered on the Introduction to the Devout Life. We extend a very hearty welcome to all of you”.

I strongly recommend our confreres to make use of this opportunity.

Salesian Thought

But after three days had passed, by his most holy resurrection his soul put on again his glorious body and its body immortal skin. Thus too he clothed himself in various garments, of those of a gardener or a pilgrim, or of some other kind, according as the salvation of men and glory of God required. Love did all this Theotimus. It is love also that entering a soul to make it happily die to itself and live again in God, strips it of all human desires and self-esteem, which is as closely fixed to our spirit as skin to flesh.
